Three of my Condition 1 cases

While this article is based around firearms, these cases can be used for anything of value that needs to be protected during storage or transportation.

Ever since the first time I needed to fly with a firearm I've envied the professional-looking hard cases I've seen others use. Brands like Pelican and Nanuk came to mind, but were well out of my budget. I tried some of the less-expensive alternatives such as military surplus which were too bulky and improperly shaped for my needs, and foregin-made cases which I purchased only to find they weren't as tough as I wanted them to be. After all of that I discovered Condition 1 and have been a loyal customer and fan ever since.

Made in Texas, USA, Condition 1 cases offer the preium features, some of which you may not realize you'd want until you've gone without:

  • IP67-rated waterprood and dustproof

  • Virtually indestructable (within reason)

  • Available in up to 10 colors (this is important for those who don't want the case to scream "Gun!" or if you need a color as an indicator.

  • Lockable & TSA complaint (I've flown multiple times with my cases)

  • Firearm-specific precut foam options

  • Pluckable foam options to configure as you need.

  • Rifle cases have incredibly smooth-rolling, off-pavement-ready wheels that embarass my regular luggage.

  • Goretex air valve fights suction lock when changing elevations or climates.

As stated previously, I've been using Condition 1 cases for a number of years. One of these cases was sent by them, the rest I've purchased for various needs and found how they did or did not meet my needs. I am an affiliate of Condition 1 now, but this article is to help you decide what you want and, like all GBGuns articles, is not a paid placement.

Though I have had a lot of experience with the five different sizes I own, most of them are from before Condition 1 numbered their cases. As a result it doesn't do me much good to relate specific-case experiences to you. Fortunately, Consition 1 has continued to advance and improve over the years and now has complete sections dedicated to:

TSA-approved lockable, Heavy duty hasps, rubberized handle, and pressure vent of a Condition 1 case

If you're shopping for general purpose not the internal measurements of each case. The overall size is a bit bigger due to rounded courners, hasps, etc. When debating between two cases I recommend erring on the smaller option if you intend to fly with it. These are noth the heaviest cases out there, but they aren't the lightest either; keep your airline's weight limit in mind when packing. I exercised this when flying to visit 12 Spies. (fun video)

Sometimes a generic insert is the most versatile, while this is a pluckable foam, I simply remove a layer to fit the guns flat in the case.

In this larger case I use two sets of pluckable foam. One to hold up to 12 pistols, another to hold two Stribogs.

If you're looking for a hard case for any use I highly recommend Condition 1. By my last count they offer 76 different sizes, all of which can be configured to your needs. While I have just three colors to show they have a total of at least eight color options, so blending in, standing out, or color coding to your needs is easy enough.

In my experience, you may need another case for a different application, but you'll not need to replace a Condition 1 case.

Another Good Reason to consider using a case like those from Condition 1 is protecting your civil rights! Take a look at this video from Hampton Law about what storage devices you use.
